One Object, Many Views (Part 1)

My wife and I are musicians and have a lot of musical instruments in the house. Here's a Euphonium photographed on the picnic table on our deck.

Playing with depth of field

More playing with depth of field. I wish I had gotten the valves in the foreground in focus, but I like my out-of focus son in the background.

Here too - too narrow depth of field. I need to start playing with some f-stops between the extremes.

pulling back

I like how the sky reflected in the bell

  1. I LOVE how the euphonium is laying on wood. I think that is a beautiful contrast, whether it was intentional or not. That is a beautiful contrast between shiny metallic curvy and a rugged dark wood table. I love the straight on shot and the shot focusing in on the buttons (probably not the right word). Great job! I look forward to looking at more of your photos.

  2. I really like the pictures you took! I especially like where you focused on the euphonium and had the background blurred. It really makes you look at whats in the foreground differently. Nice job!

  3. I like the picture of the euphonium that is straight on and laying on the wood. I also like where you focused on one specific element of the instrument and the background was blurred. I just wish you had either blurred the sky or the table. I didn't necessarily like the other elements. Great job!!!

  4. I really liked how you played with the reflection on the euphonium, it looked awesome. Also I think you did a good job of focusing on specific parts of it in certain shots. My one critic is that I would have liked to see what some of the shots would look like with more of a depth of field, I think it would draw attention away from the background which distracted from the euphonium in some of the shots

  5. I really like the first picture and how it's so focused on the keys? (I'm not musical!) Really cool how they're lined up.

  6. This was a good idea! The fourth photo is my favorite! The shiny smooth instrument on a dull textured surface, along with the greenery and flowers propped on the railing give you more to think about. It makes me think about you sitting at the table playing outside and the sound through the leaves. The picture allows you to see something but makes you think about it and wonder more.

  9. Phenomenal set of photographs! I love close-ups of anything that is intricate, but musical instruments add that layer of familiarity that makes it more endearing.
